Tenacity Worx @ 2014 Pyramid Race

As a gym, we have once again been well represented by some of our quality members at another local event.

Today’s Great Pyramid Race in Gordonvale showcased the core values of TENACITY WORX.

At our gym, we don’t train to enter competitions at a level that we can win just so we can say we won.  We train hard and we enter events that are going to push us to new limits.  This is what happened in the recent Torture In The Tropics crossfit competition, and this is what happened today at the Great Pyramid Race.

Today we are proud to say that we were represented by two of our quality members, each putting their doubts and fears aside and doing something for the first time.

Rachael ran her first 5km race, and she made a stellar effort.  As Rachael’s personal trainer, I had the honour of pacing her for this race.  What she accomplished on that course was truly incredible.  We were not quite at the ½ way mark when Rachael decided she needed to walk.  I told her she had to keep going, rest at the ½ way mark and not before.  So that is what happened.  Now, this might not seem to be marvelous, but I’m telling you that for sure it is.  Rachael has just learned a valuable lesson here…. She can do more than she thinks!!  Rachael, this is by no means a small achievement, rather, it is another step on your journey that will give you confidence & strength when times get tough…as we all know they do from time to time.

Rachael went into this race with only “General Physical Preparedness”, having not been able to train specifically for the race due to a bout of cold & flu recently visiting her home.  She missed her goal time by only a couple of minutes, but what she achieved in the process is truly incredible. Congratulations Rach!

Rach

The other highlight of the day was the sheer grit and determination that is the essence of TENACITY.  Leanne, or Rich for short, participated in the Great Pyramid Race for the first time.  Now, just incase we have people reading this that have never climbed that thing, it is tough!  Now, Rich is a fit & strong woman.  She is also determined and today demonstrated a mental toughness that is hard to find.

Having arrived at the ½ way point right on cut-off time, she was given the option to return….a couple of minutes later & she wouldn’t have been given the choice… a couple of minutes earlier, and, again, she wouldn’t have been given the choice.  Now imagine, you’ve just run 3k’s to get to that mountain, then busted your butt to get ½ way up, you’re out of breath, your body is screaming at you…. What would you do?

Well, Rich kept going.  And her reasoning? We don’t quit.

Rich, you too, learned that you can do more than you thought.  Who you really are is who you are when no-one’s looking.   You made a choice today that was tough, and you made it amidst physical, mental and emotional fatigue.  You could have taken the easy way and no one would have known, but you didn’t!  Congratulations!

RICH

Ladies,  we are so proud of the pair of you, and as one of our little cheerleaders pointed out today, you showed TENACITY!

Well done!

The Torture is Over For 2014!

Well, that’s it for this year’s crossfit comp Torture In The Tropics!

Thanks for an awesome weekend guys.  You have done yourselves proud, and we couldn’t be more proud of all of you, even if  you had won first place!

Thanks to the rest of the crew for coming on down & showing your support for your mates…. we know you are just as proud of them….maybe they’ve inspired you to get competitive next time??

And just so you know, not competing is just as tough….so, while  you go and rest your weary muscles we’ll all go and suck on some butter menthol & rest our weary throats!!

Torture in The Tropics

What a time it has been, there’s been so much going on and now we’re finally ready….or at least we hope so!  While Torture in The Tropics is not a first – time event, nor is it the first crossfit comp for our athletes who are jumping on board, but as a gym, TENACITY WORX, this is our first dance.

We take our hats off to the rest of the crew involved in organising this event, namely our friends at Crossfit Dungeon… Thanks for sharing the joy & tears involved in creating such an event as this!

So… athletes! We are 1 sleep away!  So much for de-load week…haha!  As you have travelled through a tough week in your training, for the sake of your fellow athletes and representatives at this event,  think of the poor folks over at Crossfit Mayhem, who endure months of torture before their coach and the team head off to represent them before the world!

This little  gym in Edmonton is thrilled to have athletes willing to put their skills to the test in such a huge event.  You guys will be up against some tough competition, we are so proud to have you representing us…. Team Tenacity, (aka Cass, Thea, Mitch & Rog) the fact that you’ve got the guts to stick yourselves in the RX division is simply AWESOME!  Luke & Tony, you have offered yourselves up in the SX Torture to join a couple of Dungeon Ladies, we are so proud to have you onboard.

These guys are but a sample of the  calibre of members we  have and love at TENACITY WORX!

Bring on the TORTURE!!!

Mum, 2 reasons you need to workout!

Mums & Bubs class at Tenacity Worx

Being a mum is the hardest job I’ve ever had.  There’s no RDO, no sick leave or annual leave and no 2 week notice period so you can go and find something better or higher paying.  There is always something that needs to be done, washing to fold, meals to cook, shopping to do, noses to wipe and there seems always someone that needs you for something.  If you’re a mum & you’re reading this, you know it’s true and are probably wondering, why would you tell me I need to workout on top of all these other things I have to do.  Well, there’s a multitude of good reasons but I think they can be boiled down to 2 main points.

1. IT IS GOOD FOR YOU!

You know it.  Energy is not like money in the sense that once it’s gone, it’s gone.  For some strange reason the economy of energy works quite differently.  When you spend your energy, somehow your body manages to generate more.  The release of endorphins when you’ve put yourself through a good heart thumping session gives a boost to the day that is unmatched by chocolate & coffee….as I found out the large way.  After I had my 2nd baby, I managed to send my bodyweight to a record 25kg above my ideal weight….this was something new and different for me as I’d always managed to stay in fairly good shape.  I was overwhelmed by the amount of work involved in looking after a busy toddler, caring for a new baby, and keeping house with a husband who worked away often.  I took comfort in the wonderful coffee that our flash new machine would make so beautifully….and what’s coffee without cake right?? Within a matter of weeks I was a big fat ball of sad, with no energy to play with my little one, and no enjoyment whatsoever of the amazing little baby in my arms.  How tragic!!

Then, later that year, things began to change in our lives.  My husband was now no longer working away, but was a qualified personal trainer with a job in a gym.  It was an expensive gym in my opinion, but there were many good things about it… the main thing was having a coach available during every session to answer my questions & make sure I wasn’t about to break myself.  By having a coach overseeing all of my workouts, I learned new things and gained new confidence in what I was doing.  As  I like to get value for my money, I used the cost as motivation to never miss a day, and so I dropped my 25kg fairly quickly and had energy like I hadn’t had in a long time.  In fact, I remember saying to my coach one day, that I thought I was the fittest I’d ever been in my life.  Not only did my body fit back into my favourite clothes, I had energy at home too. I could run and play with the little ones!  The house seemed to be mostly in order (and by that I mean the orderliness that is appropriate for such a life stage, not show home status by any means!).  And I didn’t feel the need to fill myself with coffee & cake, but we started learning to enjoy more healthy food.  And you know what else, I felt GOOD!  I loved feeling good, knowing I look good in that new top, or I can frock up & head out on a date with my hubby & know that I look HOT. It’s an awesome feeling, and Mum, you need to experience that.  Just because you have little ones around your feet all day, doesn’t mean you can’t feel great and look awesome!

Anyways, all that to say; Mum, you need to workout because it’s good for you!!

And,

2. IT’S GOOD FOR YOUR FAMILY!

All too often I fed myself the lie that I was being selfish by going to the gym, or doing a workout…or anything really that took my focus off of my children or my chores.  The fact is, it is highly beneficial for a child to be taught to sit and wait for 30 minutes while Mum does something for herself.  The world does not revolve around the child and if I don’t teach her that, then she will have the rudest shock when she eventually goes to school, or kindy, or daycare, or whatever the case may be.  My sweet baby is a welcome member of our family, we are a team.  Learning to sit and wait, learning to play independently are crucial skills for any child to learn, and it’s best learned as young as possible.  By working out, Mum, you are creating a training facility for your precious young one to learn these most highly valuable life skills.

You know that saying, “If Mama aint happy, aint nobody happy!”  Well, consider this, when you workout, when you reach a new milestone in your strength training, when you shave seconds of your fastest run time, when you hit that goal you’ve been working towards…you feel AWESOME!! That feeling of awesomeness makes you happy right?  When you’re overjoyed with your achievement, you grab that baby and dance the room with her without effort, you sing that silly song and make up that funny nonsensical rhyme, and in doing so,  you transform your home into a happy haven for all who dwell there…including yourself.  A happy home is a healthy home!

Yes, Mum, working out is good for your family.

May’s Fundraiser Wrap-up

What a month May turned out to be!

We’ve enjoyed the challenge of thinking and planning how we can use what we have to benefit others in our community.  The biggest stand out from our point of view, would be the kind of people we have with us at TENACITY WORX.  You are a kind, thoughtful and generous bunch of people, and we are so thankful to have each one of you along on this awesome journey with us!  Every single one of you plays a crucial part in making this place the awesome place it is today. THANK YOU!!

The next highlight has got to be that we actually achieved a goal!!  We set out to raise awareness and funds for an organisation that we have a desire to assist, but in and of ourselves aren’t able to do too much at all for them.  We’ve been reminded of  the magic of setting a goal and taking each baby step along the way to achieving it.  To be honest, there was considerable doubt at the start of the month…Can we pull this off? Will people care? Will anyone come to any of the things we have planned? What if we don’t raise any money at all?

We, once again, have learned the value of community.  It is simply amazing  for us to see that as a brand new gym with such a small number of people, we were able to raise the funds that we did for this very worthwhile cause.

Thank you all so much for your involvement and TENACITY!!

Charity of the Month

Welcome to our blog!  Yes, it has been a long time in the making, but we’ve finally figured out how it works (or so we think).  We hope to use the blog as a means of communication with you all, and keeping us all on the same page with regards to what’s on or whatever it is that a blog gets used for….we’re sure we’ll figure it out sometime.

It’s hard to imagine we’ve already crossed the 11 week mark in this amazing journey with you all.

We have been overwhelmed and humbled by the way in which TENACITY WORX has surpassed our expectations.  We are so thankful for the support of each of you, for each of you plays an important part in making this a great place…and a dream come true!

We had some very simple reasons for even entertaining the idea of opening our own gym.  Basically they boil down to our family priorities and our love for people

We have been given so much, and so, our desire is to use what we have to benefit the community we live in.  We want to help as many people as we can to live their lives to the full, which fundamentally means, in good health.

This brings us to the main purpose of this blog….

Introducing our “Charity of the month”.  Now, before you all freak out, no, we don’t plan to bombard you with 12 charities every year…. but we do plan to run this campaign for the month of May and it seemed the most succinct way to say it.  During the month of May, we plan to host some fund raising activities in support of, what we believe, a worthy local charity.  The charity we have chosen for the month is Street Level Youth Care.

Street Level Youth Care is a non-profit, non-government funded organisation, who run wholly and solely by volunteers.  These volunteers prepare meals and travel with the meal van seven nights a week, currently visiting at four locations on the southside of Cairns.

“Street level youth care exists to assist young people in need, providing food and other emergency services, general care and through promoting in them a sense of self worth and guiding them in a positive direction.”

For more information, you can visit their website: www.streetleve.youthcare.org.au

How do we plan to pull this off??

Well, firstly, our contribution:  For all new members who sign up during the month of May, their first week’s membership will go to Street Level Youth Care.

Secondly, we will be hosting a nutritional seminar, with thanks to our resident nutritionist, Cass Olholm.

Thirdly, the last Saturday of the month will be a charity fundraiser workout.

More details will follow in the days ahead.

If you have any ideas you’d like to throw into the mix, please feel free to email us, or speak to Matt.
